Fixed braces (“train tracks”)
These are the most common type of braces and can be used on adults and children of most ages. They involve fixing a small bracket to each tooth individually and then a wire is held in place with elastic or metal loops. The teeth can then slowly align over approximately 12-24 months, depending on treatment. Retainers are worn after the braces have been removed.
There are metal braces with coloured elastics, and more discreet braces called ceramic braces, that often appeal more to adult patients. These more aesthetic braces are very well accepted.
